The Pharmacology of Soothing Sensitive Skin
Modern sensitive skin is often linked to a neurosensory component and a weakened barrier. Colloidal Oatmeal (Avena sativa) is FDA-approved as a skin protectant. Its activity comes from beta-glucans (immunomodulating), phenols (antioxidant), and avenanthramides—unique alkaloids that inhibit histamine-induced NF-κB activation and prostaglandin release, reducing itch and inflammation. Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice Root) contains glabridin and licochalcone A, which potently inhibit phospholipase A2 and cyclooxygenase (COX), key enzymes in the pro-inflammatory cascade. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) provides ascorbic and caffeic acids, antioxidants that mitigate oxidative stress, while its high water and silica content offer a cooling, “vasoconstrictive” sensation mediated by TRPM8 receptor activation.
