Essential Oils: A Quick Guide to Safe Use

Essential oils precautions

METHODS OF USE

Topical (on skin) – ALWAYS DILUTE

Carrier oil: Jojoba, sweet almond, coconut oil.
Dilution: 1-3 drops of essential oil per teaspoon (5 ml) of carrier oil. For sensitive skin/face: 0.5-1%.
Patch test: Apply to inner forearm and wait 24 hours before wider use.
Avoid: Eyes, inner ears, nostrils, broken skin.
Photosensitivity: Citrus oils (bergamot, lemon) can cause skin burns in sun. Avoid UV exposure for 12h.

Inhalation (Safest method)

Diffuser: 3-10 drops in water, 30-60 min sessions.
Steam: 1-2 drops in hot water, inhale steam for 5-10 min.
Direct: 1-2 drops on tissue or palms, inhale.

Internal Use – HIGH RISK

General rule: DO NOT ingest unless under direct supervision of a qualified professional.
Why? Can cause severe irritation, organ damage, toxicity.

MAIN RISKS & SIDE EFFECTS

Skin: Irritation, burns, allergic reactions, dermatitis.
Respiratory: Bronchospasm, throat irritation (especially in asthmatics).
Systemic: Nausea, headache, dizziness.
Poisoning: Possible from excessive ingestion or improper use.

MAJOR CONTRAINDICATIONS & BANS

Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Many oils are unsafe (e.g., sage, juniper, rosemary, basil). Consult doctor.

Infants & Children (<6 years):

Avoid: Peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary, wintergreen (risk of seizures, breathing problems).

Never use undiluted. Use extreme dilution (0.5-1%) for gentle oils only.

Chronic Conditions:

Epilepsy: Avoid rosemary, fennel, sage, hyssop (can trigger seizures).

High/Low Blood Pressure: Avoid stimulating (rosemary) or strong sedative oils.

Pets:

Cats: EXTREMELY TOXIC (tea tree, citrus, pine, peppermint, eucalyptus). Can cause liver failure, death.

Birds: Very sensitive respiratory systems. Avoid diffusion near them.

Specific Bans/Warnings:

Never use undiluted on skin (except rare exceptions like pure lavender on minor burn).

Never add directly to bath water (always mix with dispersant/salt first).

Avoid old, oxidized oils or oils of unknown purity.

Do not exceed recommended doses.

Core Rule: “Natural” does not mean “safe.” Essential oils are highly concentrated chemical compounds. Quality, dilution, and specific contraindications are paramount. When in doubt, consult a professional before use.
