The Truth About Preservatives in Natural Cosmetics

Natural preservatives

A jar of water-based cream (with water, aloe, or hydrosols) is a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. Preservatives are non-negotiable for safety. The goal in natural cosmetics is to use effective, broad-spectrum systems with a clean profile.

Common Natural & Nature-Identical Preservatives:

  • Leucidal® (Fermented Radish Root): A natural preservative from fermentation.
  • Geogard® ECT (Gluconolactone & Sodium Benzoate): A mild, nature-identical system derived from corn and cranberries.
  • Vitamin E (Tocopherol): An antioxidant that prevents oils from going rancid but does not preserve water-based products.
  • Grapefruit Seed Extract: Often used, but its efficacy as a standalone preservative is debated. It’s usually combined with other systems.

Botanical helpers like Rosemary Extract (antioxidant) or essential oils with preservative properties (Tea TreeLavender) can support a primary preservative system but rarely replace it. An “unpreserved” water-based product has a very short shelf life and must be kept refrigerated
