Hydrosols (often called hydrolats or floral-herbal waters) are a co-product of the steam distillation process of plant material (flowers, leaves, twigs) used to produce essential oils.
What they consist of:
When steam passes through plant material, volatile compounds condense. The lighter, non-water-soluble part becomes essential oil, while the heavier aqueous part, saturated with water-soluble plant compounds, is the hydrosol. Thus, a hydrosol contains water + soluble plant molecules (like organic acids, traces of essential oil in soluble form, and other active botanical constituents). It is a gentle yet biologically active product.
Benefits and Uses:
- Facial Care: Excellent toners. They balance skin’s pH, gently cleanse, hydrate, and soothe. Suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive, acne-prone, or mature skin.
- Aromatherapy & Well-being: Used for inhalation, wound cleansing, compresses, or in a diffuser as a mild aromatic room freshener.
- Hair Care: Used as a final hair rinse for shine or added to hair masks.
- Natural Spray: For freshening the body, face, or linens (e.g., lavender for calming).
- Culinary: Some are used in gastronomy to flavor desserts, pastries, and beverages (e.g., rose water).
Key Advantages: They are gentle, non-irritating, do not require dilution (unlike essential oils), and are suitable for daily use.
